Safar ki dua (dua e safar) is the supplication a Muslim recites when setting out on a journey, after sitting in the car, bus, train or plane. Its words come from the Quran, Surah Az-Zukhruf, verses 13 and 14, and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ recited them when he began a journey. Full Safar Ki Dua from Hadith

Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mounted his camel to set out on a journey, he said Allahu Akbar three times, recited the dua above, and then continued with these words (Sahih Muslim: 1342):

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَسْأَلُكَ فِي سَفَرِنَا هَذَا الْبِرَّ وَالتَّقْوَى، وَمِنَ الْعَمَلِ مَا تَرْضَى، اللَّهُمَّ هَوِّنْ عَلَيْنَا سَفَرَنَا هَذَا وَاطْوِ عَنَّا بُعْدَهُ، اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ الصَّاحِبُ فِي السَّفَرِ وَالْخَلِيفَةُ فِي الْأَهْلِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ وَعْثَاءِ السَّفَرِ وَكَآبَةِ الْمَنْظَرِ وَسُوءِ الْمُنْقَلَبِ فِي الْمَالِ وَالْأَهْلِ

Roman English: Allahumma inna nas’aluka fi safarina hazal-birra wat-taqwa, wa minal-‘amali ma tarda. Allahumma hawwin ‘alayna safarana haza watwi ‘anna bu’dah. Allahumma antas-sahibu fis-safar, wal-khalifatu fil-ahl. Allahumma inni a’uzu bika min wa’tha’is-safar, wa ka’abatil-manzar, wa su’il-munqalabi fil-mali wal-ahl.

Translation: O Allah, we ask You on this journey of ours for righteousness and piety, and for deeds that please You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and shorten its distance for us. O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the Guardian of the family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardship of travel, from a distressing sight, and from an ill return in wealth and family.

Dua When Returning from a Journey

The same hadith mentions that on returning, the Prophet ﷺ recited the same words and added:

آيِبُونَ تَائِبُونَ عَابِدُونَ لِرَبِّنَا حَامِدُونَ

Roman English: Ayibuna, ta’ibuna, ‘abiduna, li rabbina hamidun.

Translation: We are returning, repenting, worshipping, and praising our Lord.

Dua When Leaving Home

Before the journey begins, it is Sunnah to recite this short dua when stepping out of the house (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi):

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ، وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ

Roman English: Bismillah, tawakkaltu ‘alallah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.

Translation: In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no might and no power except with Allah.

When to Recite Safar Ki Dua

When leaving home: recite the dua for leaving the house.
After sitting in the vehicle: say Allahu Akbar three times, then recite safar ki dua. This applies to a car, bike, bus, train, plane or ship.
On the way back: recite the same dua and add the words for returning.

What Does Safar Ki Dua Mean?

The dua has two parts. In the first, the traveller admits that the vehicle is under his control only because Allah made it so, and that he could not have managed it by his own strength. In the second, he remembers that every journey ends, and that the final return is to Allah. Reciting it is an act of gratitude and trust, and it does not replace taking care on the road.
